This Steatite pipe shows a woman with a gathering basket sitting on her feet. Her hair is coiled in a topknot. she is wearing a head band, and large ear spools. It is carved from dark steatite and exhibits weathering. The gathering basket has conspicuous shoulder straps. She appears to be bare breasted. The large earspools suggest they were made of wood rather than solid copper. Thus the age of this pipe may be late Adena or early Hopewell. The Ohio Historical Society has on line information. Go to this link and search PIPES. This pipe may have been smoked to treat human reproductive problems.
